What is homeowner's insurance?
Your homeowner's insurance provides coverage against damage and liability.
There are 3 types of homeowner's insurance:
- Basic
- covers fires, lightening, hail, explosions, vandalism, etc.
- Broad
- basic + burglary, falling objects, ice, frozen plumbing...
- Special
- basic + broad + allows you to list your own inclusions.
Liability refers to if a non-household member gets injured on your property, for example due to falling ice from your roof.
What is renters insurance?
Renters insurance only covers personal property owned by the insured; the owner of the dwelling must maintain coverage for damages to the home itself.
What is a dwelling policy?
If you do not qualify for a homeowner's policy - for example if you rent your home - it excludes liability coverage - this is the main difference between dwelling and homeowner's insurance. A dwelling policy will cover contents and the actual dwelling (structure) only.
